Dental implants are an artificial replacement for a tooth that is fixed to your jaw bone like a natural tooth. If you look after your teeth and implants properly, they can last for the rest of your life.
They are made of titanium and have an internal screw called an abutment that holds a false tooth in place. A single dental implant can support one or several replacement teeth—you do not always need one implant per tooth.
Making the decision
Dental implant surgery involves at least one operation. You need healthy gums and a jawbone strong enough to hold the implants. Your dentist will advise whether implants are suitable for you, especially if you smoke, have had radiotherapy, or have conditions such as diabetes or osteoporosis.
All-on-X implants
All-on-X is also known as All-on-4, All-on-5, All-on-6, or teeth in a day. This procedure enables a whole set of permanent teeth to be fixed in place by four to six dental implants in each jaw, often on the same day. It is suitable if you are struggling with dentures, have many missing teeth, or have been told your teeth are failing.
Why replace missing teeth?
- Increase confidence when smiling
- Chew food properly and prevent digestive problems
- Stop remaining teeth from moving
- Help prevent jaw bone shrinkage that can change facial shape
The steps involved
- Initial consultation — your dentist explains what happens before, during, and after treatment.
- In-depth assessment — examination of teeth, gums, and mouth; CBCT scan to assess bone, sinuses, and nerves.
- Placement surgery — implant placed under local anaesthetic with a cover screw or temporary restoration.
- Healing period — typically two to three months for integration with bone.
- Final restoration — scans taken and the permanent crown or bridge fitted over two to four appointments.
Single tooth implants
A single implant replaces one missing tooth without compromising adjacent teeth, preserving bone and providing a strong foundation for a custom porcelain crown.
